Monocouche Render is a rendering system that offers a low maintenance, breathable, water resistant and coloured coating. It is also known as Through Colour Render and Scratch Render. Monocouche is derived from the French word mono, which means single, and couche, in French, means coat. It is a highly popular external render that protects homes from various external elements while giving them a distinct thin flat finish. Monocouche renders are applied in two passes, but these bond together to form one strong monolithic coat. 

Basically, ashlar rendering is a method of recreating that impressive stonework, without the stones.
